High-Performance State & Storage CoreStatus: Engineering Preview

SymbioFS

SymbioFS is a compact state/storage core for systems that need fast local access, immutable content, versioning, recovery and multiple semantic access layers on one shared foundation.

Starting point

SymbioFS

Many applications combine files, object storage, event logs, snapshots and application-specific state as separate subsystems. This increases copying, synchronization overhead and recovery complexity while making robust versioning, provenance and deduplication harder.

Product approach

Product approach

SymbioFS unifies these requirements in a content-addressed, versioned core. Immutable content, version graphs, snapshots, WAL/event streams and crash-consistent state transitions form the foundation; filesystem, object, event and agent-native APIs are adapters or semantic layers over the same core.

Capabilities

SymbioFS

Content-addressed immutable objects with deduplication and stable identity

Version graphs, snapshots and traceable state history

Crash-consistent state transitions with WAL/recovery semantics

Filesystem, object, event and agent-native access layers over one core

High-performance local storage for many small objects and state-heavy applications

Persistent event stream with cursor/replay semantics

Evidence, provenance, integrity chains and immutable artifacts

FUSE/CBFS and other filesystem interfaces as replaceable adapters

Local offline state as a foundation for later replication and synchronization

Embeddable storage layer for databases and specialized engines

Workflow

Workflow

Address content

Content and objects receive stable content-derived identities instead of depending on paths or sessions.

Version state

Changes create traceable versions, snapshots and relationships without silently overwriting historical state.

Persist & recover

WAL/event semantics and crash-consistent commit paths protect state transitions and controlled restart.

Adapt semantics

Filesystem, object, event or agent-native interfaces use the same core through appropriate adapters and capabilities.

Best fit

  • AI/agent systems for persistent state, memory, evidence and provenance
  • High-performance local storage for applications with many small objects
  • Versioned object stores with immutable content, version graphs and snapshots
  • Build and artifact caches using content addressing and deduplication
  • Edge systems with robust local persistence and later replication
  • Local-first applications with offline state, history and later synchronization
  • Audit/evidence systems with immutable objects, origin history and integrity chains
  • Realtime/event applications with persistent WAL/event streams, cursors and replay
  • High-performance virtual filesystems through FUSE/CBFS or comparable adapters
  • Storage layers for databases or specialized engines requiring versioning, CAS and recovery

Operating model

SymbioFS is designed as an embeddable core. Applications can use the storage core directly or connect through filesystem, object, event and agent-native adapters. Persistence and replication strategies are explicit capabilities so the core is not tied to one host, filesystem or cloud provider.

Built from practice

SymbioFS productizes the storage and persistence work around SymbioRAP SynapseFS into a general-purpose core. Performance, crash behavior, recovery and concurrency are validated with reproducible benchmarks and crash/race tests; concrete performance figures are published only for defined measured workloads.
